Walterville Mural

a TeenARTS project

A new mural on the front of Walterville School in Springfield was unveiled on May 17, 2002. The artwork was created by artist Kate Bollons and Walterville students. The 8' x 16' mural shows the changes that the Walterville area has gone through over the past 50 years. The unveiling was part of the Walterville School 50th Anniversary Celebration.

In a combination of in-school and after-school activities, students in grades 6-8 helped design and paint the mural. Students interviewed their grandparents and members of the Anniversary Committee about what life was like in Walterville 50 years ago and what has changed. The stories helped them envision what to depict.

The design was then taken by a group of 14 students who were selected to paint the mural. They spent 5 weeks working with Kate Bollons on the project after school.
