The McKenzie Arts Forum's McKenzie River Totem project ran from June to October, 2001. 6 youth and 3 professional artists from the McKenzie Arts Forum created a sculpture that incorporates the landscape, flora, fauna, culture, and history of the McKenzie River area. The project engaged the youth in the entire art process, including the design, implementation, and exhibition of the sculpture.
McKenzie Arts Forum artists Sally Metcalf, Julia O'Reilly, and Patti Wessman worked with the youth, ages 13-17, selected from the community. The youth were paid an honorarium for their participation in the project. The sculpture was unveiled at the McKenzie Forest Service Scenic Byway West Portal during the McKenzie Arts Festival on October 12-14, 2001.
