The Jessie Bostelle Memorial Mural, located in Springfield's Art Alley at Fifth and Main, was completed in June 2001. The project was coordinated in partnership by YouthArts, a program of Lane Arts Council, Springfield Arts Commission, and the Service Employees International Union Local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union (SEIU Local 503, OPEU). Under the guidance of Eugene artist Alison McNair, seven Springfield students began painting on March 27, 2001. The mural commemorates Jessie Bostelle, a dedicated union activist and educator, who died of cancer in 1998. It represents education, work and community -- values deemed important by Bostelle in her life's work. The students, who were paid a stipend for their involvement, were chosen from those recommended by teachers at Thurston and Springfield High Schools and Gateway Learning Center.
