Churchill Alternative High School Mural

a TeenARTS project

Is it possible for hands, feet, and faces to emerge from a cinderblock wall? At Churchill Alternative High School in Eugene it is! Artist Anthony Vanderford led students in a unique mural project at the school. Students' faces, hands, and feet were cast and attached to an interior classroom wall. Some hands hold an umbrella as another pair clutches a watering can. Surrounding the appendages swirl vibrant colors forming a student-designed mural that incorporates the theme of community building.

Teens from Churchill Alternative worked with youth from Jefferson Middle, mentoring them on the middle school portion of the design.

This project was developed in partnership by Churchill Alternative, Anthony Vanderford, and YouthArts, a program of Lane Arts Council. Supported by funds from the Oregon Community Foundation's Edna L. Holmes Fund through Lane Arts Council and by Churchill Alternative High School.
