Andrea DiPalma Yansane — Ceramics

  • Bring classroom lessons and school themes to new life with the magic of clay! Join Andrea DiPalma Yansane as she leads ceramic residencies that work directly with teachers and administrators to reinforce student curriculum with the creation of ceramic projects. Students learn basic hand building techniques such as pinch pot, coil and slab building, dug outs and adding attachments to sculptural and pottery forms to make fun and creative projects that include finger puppets, animal sculptures, teapots, cups and bowls as well as boxes and pots with removable lids. Students also learn about all of the stages in the ceramics process from digging clay out of the earth to firing it in a hot kiln to how to best create pieces that will be used daily in their homes.
  • Andrea DiPalma Yansane is a graduate of the UO Fine Arts Department, former Resident Potter of four years at the UO Craft Center and creator of Dancing Hands Ceramics. She has influenced many aspiring ceramic students throughout the Pacific Northwest with her creative ceramic forms, vibrant glaze combinations, wax resist patterns and her ability to give specific techniques that help students develop detailed projects.
  • Surface decoration, glazing and under glazing, texture, pattern and color use will be discussed and different techniques will be covered to help students finish their pieces with a unique self-expressive flare! Kids will be engaged and inspired by having their hands in clay everyday throughout the residency working independently and as a group with Andrea's individual attention. Students gain an understanding of three dimensional design techniques and color theory while developing their own ideas and styles by completing these kid-tested clay projects. Additionally, students benefit by learning how to use tools safely and effectively, troubleshoot ceramic issues that arise and talk about their work critically.
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary education include language arts, mathematics, cultural arts, history and science enabling students to have a deeper connection to what they learn in the classroom.
